Building the Bridge Between Medicine and Fitness
Presented by: Jeff Young, MS, CSCS
Description:
The purpose of this presentation is to provide attendees with simple, clear, evidence-based information on clinically safe exercise programming. While there will be a strong emphasis on resistance training program design, the content will also cover aerobic exercise programming. The concepts, guidelines, and principles explained apply to all populations across the lifespan, and will instruct how to merge medical and rehabilitation guidelines with exercise science.
Frequently asked questions will be answered, including but not limited to:
1. What does the evidence suggest are the appropriate sets and repetitions to perform in resistance training?
2. How do I determine the initial weights to use?
3. My patient has co-morbidities and associated symptoms, and is apprehensive: how do I take these into consideration in a progressive program?
4. Is high-intensity interval training safe for my patient?
5. How do I connect with qualified fitness professionals?

Close encounters of the best kind: Utilizing a kinetic chain approach to the relationship between the thoracic spine, the scapulae, and the glenohumeral joint to maximize upper extremity outcomes
Presented by: Mike Mueller, OTR, CHT
Description: Hand therapists frequently treat more distal upper extremity conditions and report less comfort and competence with treatment of more proximal joints beyond the shoulder, including the scapulothoracic region and pectoral girdle. As upper extremity rehabilitation specialists it is essential to develop and maintain a kinetic chain approach to effectively treat patients. This instructional session will provide essential education related to evaluation and treatment of the kinetic chain, inclusive of the scapulothoracic region and pectoral girdle, to support clinical excellence and improved outcomes for patients who seek specialty upper extremity rehabilitation under our care.
Biography: Mike Mueller OTR, CHT is a staff hand therapist at Rothman Orthopaedics and has over 30 years of experience in the field in a variety of settings. He has a special interest in the management of the athlete's upper extremity injuries and has extensive experience with athletes from the youth to the professional levels.
