Course description:
This is an intermediate to advanced course that is open to any therapist who is responsible for custom orthotic fabrication. This is a lab-intensive course designed to improve orthotic fabrication skills. Orthoses fabricated will range from static progressive to dynamic. Lab assistants will be available throughout the course to guide and assist you with this “hands-on” experience.
The intended audience for this course is OTs, OTAs, PTs & PTAs.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
Course participants will demonstrate the ability to fabricate several custom orthoses
Course participants will identify indications/contraindications of the orthoses shown below
Course participants will demonstrate knowledge of practical applications of orthoses

Presenter's Bio:
Christine Eddow earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Southern California in 1990 and went on to complete her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree through Loma Linda University in 2003. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, Cum Laude, from Cal Poly Pomona in 1986. She completed her PhD in Education with an emphasis in higher education leadership through Northcentral University in May 2017 and presented her doctoral dissertation research at the California Physical Therapy Association conference in San Diego, California in September 2017. She has been practicing in the Riverside, California area since 1990.
Christine is a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) and is also board certified in Orthopedics (OCS) and Women’s Health (WCS). She has served as Clinical Faculty at Loma Linda University since 1994 and is the Director of Post Professional Education and Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, California.
Christine is a member of the American Society of Hand Therapists and the Orthopedic, Hand Rehabilitation, Education, Research and Women’s Health sections of the American Physical Therapy Association. She also teaches both Women’s Health and Hand Therapy continuing education courses at the post-professional level. She specializes in Hand Therapy, Orthopedics and Women’s Health.
Paul Gerstenfeld is a certified hand therapist who earned a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, undergraduate degree in Recreational Therapy, and minoring in Psychology. He has over 20 years of experience treating disorders of the upper extremity helping people recover function and return to normal activities. He excels in creating adaptive devices, orthotic construction, modifying tools and helping people become more independent.
Previous to becoming an OT, Paul taught English as a Second Language, physical education, massage therapy and worked in special education with troubled youth. His clinical skills in concert with a rich, multidisciplinary background help in treating the person rather than the injury alone.
Adrienne Tesarek is a graduate of Louisiana State University and moved to California after graduation. Her career started at UCSD Medical Center as an inpatient therapist before transitioning to the outpatient department where she mentored to sit for the hand exam. She became a CHT in 2005. Since that time she has done teaching at Grossmont Community College in their OTA program and presented at OT conferences on custom orthotic fabrication and conservative management of thumb CMC OA. In 2013 she moved to Los Angeles to work at UCLA and was a member of the Rehab Services Education Committee coordinating continuing education for her fellow OT’s. Also during her time in Los Angeles, she joined the non-profit Hand Therapy Society of Greater Los Angeles, serving as their secretary and is currently the president. She moved back to San Diego in 2021 and currently works for Palomar Health in Poway, CA. She has taken the position of president of the San Diego Hand Special Interest Group and formed a new education committee at Palomar Health.
