Course Description

This is an intermediate level, in-depth course reviewing anatomy, structure, and function of the upper extremity. Occupational and Physical Therapists treating pathologies in this region will gain a richer understanding of these areas to enhance evaluation, intervention, and treatment approaches. This is a case based educational opportunity which will help you refine your critical thinking skills for the benefit of your patients. There will be 4 stations that each group will rotate through for small group interactions and to maximize your learning experience.

4 stations consist of:

  • Shoulder to elbow cadaver dissection
  • Elbow to wrist cadaver dissection
  • Anatomage virtual dissection and case studies
  • Anatomy, physiology and kinesiology review and discussion

Learning objectives:

  1. To provide OT’s and PT’s with an in-depth practical knowledge of hand and upper extremity anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology
  2. To gain an understanding of the impact of trauma, pathology, and aging on upper extremity function in order to adjust evaluation, treatment interventions, and goals appropriately
  3. To promote the concept of dynamic anatomy function in hand and upper extremity evaluation and treatment approaches in order to achieve optimal outcomes
  4. To encourage the synthesis of anatomical, pathologic, and psychosocial factors in order to gain the most thorough understanding of appropriate interventions and expected outcomes.
  5. To relate anatomical structure to assessment and intervention in upper extremity rehabilitation
  6. To relate specific anatomical structures to function, pathology and injury commonly seen in the UE rehabilitation.

*** Prior to the course you will be assigned to a group who will attend all the sessions together in a particular order. Everyone will attend each session for about 1 hour each.
