Purpose: to provide a clinical workshop is to assist occupational therapists (OTs), certified occupational therapist assistants (COTAs), physical therapists (PTs), and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) in the evaluation and treatment of clients with shoulder impingement. This workshop is intended to help therapists feel more comfortable performing a clinical examination to determine the type of impingement involved and efficiently develop an appropriate plan of care. Course participants will have an opportunity to perform joint mobilization techniques to address posterior shoulder tightness, manual therapy techniques to address bursal irritation, perform scapular taping techniques as well as evidence-supported research for rotator cuff and scapular stabilization strengthening.

Course objectives: Through a combination of lecture and lab, participants will

  1. Identify key structures of the shoulder girdle and gain an appreciation for the orientation of the glenoid fossa, in preparation for joint mobilization techniques.
  2. Perform a clinical exam to assess the integrity of the rotator cuff musculature, identify faulty scapular mechanics, bursal irritation, and determine posterior shoulder tightness. Appreciate how the findings of the clinical examination will determine the treatment plan.
  3. Understand the difference in clinical presentation between external and internal impingement and how to prioritize the impairments for these patients.
  4. Demonstrate ability to perform joint mobilization techniques to address posterior shoulder tightness related to shoulder impingement.
  5. Develop an understanding for the exercise techniques to address for patients with external and internal impingement.

Agenda:

07:30 - 08:00 - Registration

08:00 - 09:00 - Lecture: anatomy and kinesiology of the shoulder: glenohumeral joint, acromioclavicular joint, sternoclavicular joint, and scapular mechanics

09:00 - 10:00 - Lab: clinical examination of the shoulder

10:00 - 10:15 - Break
